On Digital Collage

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 16, 2013, 9:38 PM
I'm  a photomanipulator first, but I enjoy creating collages as well. It something I started doing a long  time ago just for fun, but only recently found mixing the two  gave me a way to create images I couldn't alone. To me, this is what digital collage is all about.

*hogret, of #ArtfulDodgers and #AlteredMixedCollages,  explains digital collage and how it differs from photomanipulation:
"The basic definition of  Digital Collage is that it is a form of graphic art that uses virtual imagery and textures from different sources pieced and layered together (in a program such as Photoshop)  into one final assembled image. The difference between digital collage and photomanipulation is that in a digital collage the artist usually works to make it somewhat obvious that the finished image has been made by "pasting" different images together...Digital collages often also use various digital techniques to make the finished product look like it is put together using traditional collage methods (illusions of taped or pasted paper, frayed or torn edges, the hint of 3D dimension in placement of different images, rough-cut edges, etc.).  Photomanipulators, on the other hand, tend to aim at an illusion of seamlessly blended and merged reality (albeit a strange and surreal one!)."
Digital Collage

In addition, $techgnotic wrote a very insightful journal, The Enduring Enigma of Collage which ignited a 225 thread of comments and 485 favorites,  If you're interested, this is one of the best article on  the subject.

Still, there is a problem when it comes to submitting digital collages to deviantART. There is no direct category for digital collage as there is for it's traditional counterpart. Some deviants submit to photomanipulation, which is inaccurate. Others submit to mixed media, but this is also inaccurate. In 2007, `kuschelirmel wrote an journal that introduced mixed media to deviants. She stated, "If you mix traditional and digital art, you need to determine which of the two you used more and place your deviation accordingly. Neither the traditional nor the digital Mixed Media galleries are to be used to post traditional/digital mixes!"
Digital Art > Mixed Media gallery now online!

So where should digital collage go?

I'm trying to help get digital collage as a proper submission category, therefore I've contacted both $Moonbeam13 and ^Aeirmid requesting for the category be added. I'm asking all creators of digital  collages to do the same.

Below are a few digital collages that have been categorized as a photomanipulation or as a mixed media.

The Anti-Cliche Challenge

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 1, 2013, 5:52 AM
Do you see the same stock being used over and over? Do you find that you do the same theme and technique over and over?

No matter how you see a cliche (with the same stock, or continuous style), in the long run, such  images can become trite from being overly used.  Not that it's a bad thing to have your own particular "style" because it does make it easy to identify your deviations.  Still some photomanipulators do change their style and technique now and then to give their gallery a fresh look.

For me, the stock below are examples of stock that have been overly used. Editing or using them in a completely different way would "break" the cliche.

What would you do in an Anti-Cliche deviation?
Would you take overly used theme stock and place them in a different environment and edit them to look completely different?

Or, would you take the same theme stock that you always use, and create a photomanipulation using a different style and technique?

The Anti-Cliche challenge is just that, finding a way to "break" away from the cliche.

:bulletpink: Challenge begins February 1st, and ends February 28th, at 11:59 p.m., PST. Check the World Clock for the time in your area.

:bulletpink: Must be a new deviation created specially for this challenge. All deviations must have been uploaded to deviantArt after February 1st.

:bulletpink: Don't know where to start? You're welcome to use one or more of the above stock, or one or more from the stock at the links below.

:bulletpink: You may enter up to TWO deviations, but you can only win once.

:bulletpink: Only traditional photomanipulations. No painting over stock or other mixed media.

:bulletpink: No pre-made backgrounds.

:bulletpink: All stock must be legitimate and given credit. I will verify the stock, so you must include direct links.

:bulletpink: There are two categories: Beginners, and Intermediate/Advance. Any entry under Beginner that is obviously an Intermediate or Advance deviation will be disqualified.

:bulletpink: Please state in your comments that the deviation  is for the "Anti-Cliche" Challenge at #CRPhotomanipulation and include the #CRPhotomanipulation's avatar. Also include the category you're entering under (Beginner or Intermediate/Advance), and why your entry is an Anti-Cliche deviation for  you.

:bulletpink: When ready, upload your entry into the "Anti Cliche Challenge"  Folder at #CRPhotomanipulation.

Happy New Year everyone!

We got some snow for Christmas and a little afterwords, so it's nice and cold outside. Thank goodness I have very few reasons to go outside! Instead, it's nice to sit inside and look out side at the beautiful snow.

Here are some more Winter theme deviations that I found around dA that I hope you enjoy. :)

The Familiar Winners And Feature

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 18, 2012, 10:25 AM

In October, #ManipulateThis had a Halloween theme contest called "The Familiar". It was a fun contest. Again I want to congratulate all of the winners.

In this journal I am featuring the winners for each level (Beginners, Intermediate, and Advance), and choosing three deviations from their gallery. I hope you enjoy. :)

Autumn Is Officially Here

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 23, 2012, 10:07 AM
"I may not comment, but I'm loving what I see! Keep submitting those great images and I'll keep coming by to see what you've done. :)"

Hello!

Well, it's the first day of Autumn here in the Northern Hemisphere, and I can look out my windows and already see the oranges and yellows of some near  by trees. Others are slowly changing from green to their Autumn colors. I can't wait to see rows upon rows of the same colors making the city beautiful.

This is my favorite time of the year, and I wanted to share it with you. Below are some new Autumn theme deviations that have been submitted over the last month. Enjoy!

I've been forgetting to change my feature! It was the beginning of July when I decided to show off some of my newly absolute favs in a series of journal features, when I looked around the other day and I was already staring at the beginning of September! I don't  know exactly what happened, but I do want to continue showing off some really cool deviations that I've faved over the last month. Enjoy!

I've been busy with other projects that have cut into my time at dA. I even wanted to do more features for my Anniversary month, but didn't get to that either. So please forgive me if it seems like I've disappeared, that I've forgotten about all of my friends, and aren't ready to make some knew ones, because it's not true. Cats, Cats, And More Cats 2

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 29, 2012, 5:38 AM

Whoa! July really went by fast! And it's been a mucky hot one, at least for those who have to get out into it. I'm lucky enough to be able to sit inside a nice air conditioned apartment, listening to some cool jazz.

I missed my planned Features for July because my head has been else where for a while, but that's okay. A person can only do as much as their mind and body expects of them, so I'm not fretting over it. I'm just here to give some special attention to what I find to be good art here at dA.

I love cats. Yes, I'm a cat person and don't hesitate to say I am. Right now, I can't think of all of  the reasons why I love cats other than the fact that they are so much a mystery, and good bug hunters.

We have a 17-year-old tabby name Sliver (from the Nirvana song) who seems to have lost his hearing in at least one ear, and that just breaks my heart. I hope he can hang in there for a while longer, but he's an elderly cat and can go any time, and that saddens me so.

Oh, and I'm looking for a baby kitten to adopt. Sliver lives with my son in Arizona, and I'm way up here in Illinois, and I'm ready to give some "kitty love" to a little one who needs some. By my next Cat feature, I'll have a one year old trying to sit on my lap while I'm putting the feature together.

For all the cat lovers among us, Enjoy!

July, My dA Anniversary Month!

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 1, 2012, 1:49 PM
"Those of you who know me well, know I keep very busy at dA. So, please accept any favorite as a comment, because if I've given you a favorite (or even featured a deviation by you), I really do love your work. And when I get the chance to stop to comment, know that your deviation rocked my world."

July 11th will mark  my 7th year anniversary on deviantArt. Wow, if anyone had told me then that I would still be here in 2012, and be as active as I am, I would have said "pshaw!" (yes, with an explanation point). Yet, here I am. I've met some super cool people, some I'm still in contact with, I've lost a few, and others have disappeared completely for one reason or another. Yet, here I am.

In case you didn't know, I am the founder of #artistsofcolor, administrator (not the original Founder) of #ManipulateThis. I recently took over administrator duties at both #Gallery42 and #HumanConditions. I am also a co-founder at #Castle-of-Cards, #DarkArt-Challenges, #DA-Art-Gallery,  and #Digital-Art-Fantasy. Besides this fantasy art account, I also have a more mature  and dark art account at ~thesassysim, though I put that account on hold since I've started putting more mature and dark art at this account.

Is that all? I think so. If I missed someone, please forgive me. :)

My plan this month is to first, show you my deviations from the past 12 months; second, give a feature to my favorite stock providers; and,  show off deviations by my dA friends. During the last week I'll deliver some more eye candy with some of the current deviations that I've given  favorites.

So enjoy a look at 2011-2012 with me.

Project Educate-Conceptual Art

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 7, 2012, 4:48 AM
"Those of you who know me well, know I keep very busy at dA. Unfortunately, this leaves very little time for me to comment, even though I would like to. I'm even behind on giving faves. So, accept any favorite as comments, because if I've given you a favorite (or even featured a deviation by you), I really do love your work. I have the pleasure of writing the article on Conceptual Art for  Project Education Photomanipulation Week. I hope those of you who have been unsure and those of you who simply didn't know, will learn something about Conceptual Art today. :)

Wait! Before I get started, I do want to pimp Photomanipulation's Official Contest, "When Darkness Falls", sponsored by :devthe-sacred-place:.  This is a contest for the darkenss in all  of us, and now one specifically for us photomanipulators. You can find the details at :devthe-sacred-place:.

What is Conceptual Art?

Answer: Conceptual art deals with ideas rather than with the final product. It is "art in which the idea behind a particular work, and the means of producing it, are more important than the finished work." [link]

"Conceptual art is art in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns."
[link]

Conceptual art, a movement conceived in the 1960s, stresses the artist's concept rather than the art object itself. Conceptual art grew out of minimalism and "turned the artist's thoughts and ideas themselves into the primary artistic medium, appealing to the spectator's intellect instead of emotions."
[link]

Conceptual art is often confused with Surreal and Abstract because often they have some of the same elements. However, Conceptual art differs from Surreal because it does not have a "disorienting quality of a dream" as deviantArt defines it; more than not, Surreal makes  the viewer feel that the scene that they are looking can be possible, just unreal. In addition, Conceptual is not Abstract, because, in Abstract, art objects and shapes are not usally recognizeable. Instead, Conceptual Photomanipulions, as defined by deviantArt, are deviations "with the intent to convey a concept rather than focus on the subject shown".

When I had asked *crilleb50 how he defines art, he wrote:

"I'm not quite sure if I know what conceptual art is really. If I think logically about it, for me, it should be a specific thing, person or whatever that has other things around it, associated to each other. One specific object surrounded with similar more diffus objects. If you understand how i mean."

Three of *crilleb50 favorite Surreal deviants are `dapper-owl, ~pekthong, and ~eclipsy

Here are three of my favorite deviations by *crilleb50

When I asked =Bark how he comes up with the ideas for his conceptual art, he wrote:

"The ideas for my work are a mixture of everything I've ever read, viewed, heard and dreamed. Everything swirls around in a concrete mixer in my head until the right blend is achieved, then an idea will pour out."

Actually, what =Bark wrote above is known as Conceptual writing. He also states that "Conceptual is simply illustrating an idea."

Here =Bark's three favorite deviants of Conceptual art,  *hearthy, ~x-pyre12, and *LeQuernez

My three favorite deviations by =Bark are:

Below are some stock that I found by putting Conceptual into the Search box and following  Resources and Stock Images >Stock.

:

If  you're interested in creating Conceptual art, it helps to look at the stock available to you here, or legitimate stock accounts on the internet, free your mind of everything you know about fine and digital art, and let the image simply exist. Because the idea behind the art is more important than the what.

3 x 10, Art With Men

June is Men's Month and it is an awareness month for men's health. If you really love the man in your life, work very hard to get  him to a doctor. No, I'm  serious. Men won't go for a physical until we make the actual  appointment,  drive him to the doctor's office, sit with him in that little white room as he waits in his whitie-tidies and that skimpy paper gown, waiting patiently until the doctor get's there. Because if we don't' sit with him in his tidie-whities and the paper gown, he's out the window, driving away because you forgot to hold on to the keys.

So to celebrate Men's Month, I'm featuering 10 deviants who celebrate men. A few are stock artists, and the rest are deviations created by people who believe that men have a place in art. Enjoy!

I have no idea when I first heard that phrase, but last night, as the rain was putting me slowly to sleep, I once again sang the ditty in my head. Although some flowers are already here, that saying is still true.

So my new feature is of flowers.

Enjoy the sight, just wish I could also bring you the smell of those beautiful blooms.
